DISCUS

Troubleshooting Tips

The following questions / tips are designed to assist library staff in identifying and resolving DISCUS access problems.

01Try it again! Or close and re-open the browser and try the access again.

02Do the computer and the browser settings meet the minimum technical requirements?

03What is the specific database and Web address (URL) that you cannot access?

04Can you connect to other DISCUS databases and/or other Web sites?

05What is the specific error message? Or the specific problem that occurs?

06Try accessing the database on other computers. Does the problem affect just one computer or some/all computers at your site?

07Check with your institution's technical contact person/department. Are similar problems being experienced at other sites of your institution? Or just at your site? Can your institution's technical staff assist you in resolving the problem?

If you determine that the problem cannot be resolved locally, please notify your institution’s DISCUS contact person(s).  Please provide the answers to questions #3 through #6 (above) in any communications, so the problem can be resolved more quickly.

If your patrons are experiencing access problems from home/office:

01Do the computer and the browser settings meet the minimum technical requirements?

02Is the user accurately entering your institution’s correct home access information?   (ex: current username and/or password, entered in lower case, “Caps Lock” key turned OFF)

03What is the URL of the Web page being used to link to DISCUS resources?

04Is the user actually “clicking” on a specific database in order to access it?

05Is the user aware that when accessing from the www.scdiscus.org page, some databases require a password only, while SIRS products might request a customer number (which is the same as the username).

06What is the specific database and URL that cannot be accessed?

07Can the user connect to other DISCUS databases and/or other Web sites?

08What is the specific error message? Or the specific problem that occurs?

If you determine that the problem cannot be resolved locally, please notify your institution’s DISCUS contact person(s).  Please provide the answers to questions #3 through #8 (above) in any communications, so the problem can be resolved more quickly.
