Discus Welcomes New Staff

The State Library is pleased to announce that Patricia Sinclair has joined the library as the new Electronic Resources Coordinator.  Patricia will direct the overall operations of the library’s electronic resources, including Discus – South Carolina’s Virtual Library.

During the current school year, the students at New Ellenton Middle School in the Aiken County Public School District have been learning about their school library and Discus – South Carolina’s Virtual Library.  

Students face big challenges when doing research and using general Internet search tools like Google, Yahoo, and Bing to find information.  They often find that:

New Ellenton Middle School Media Specialist Janice Grathen goes the extra mile when working with her students as they use the Discus resources in their research.  After locating the information they need in a Discus database, the students write thank-you letters to legislators who represent Aiken County in the South Carolina General Assembly.

Prize Winners at the 2014 SCASL Conference

The South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL) gathered in Columbia last week for its 39th annual conference with a theme of Leadership @ Your Library.   The SCASL conference provided many opportunities for professional growth, networking, and reflection on the role of school librarians in South Carolina.  Discus – South Carolina’s Virtual Library and the State Library were represented in the exhibit hall and in the sessions. 

USC Students Create LibGuide for Discus

Discus LibGuide

A group of University of South Carolina students in the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) created a Discus LibGuide as part of an assignment in the Spring 2013 “Introduction to Information Sources and Services” course.  As easy methods of curating and sharing information on individual topics, LibGuides are used extensively by libraries around the world.
