DISCUS the FishOctober 10, 2007 -- Students at Gilbert Elementary School enjoy the thousands of magazines, newspapers and reference books available through DISCUS - South Carolina's Virtual Library.  In fact, they’re so excited about the “virtual library” that they named their pet fish DISCUS!  Now DISCUS, The Fish serves as the media center’s mascot.

According to Debbie Jackson, the school’s media specialist, “My students just love DISCUS!  When they see DISCUS, The Fish, it serves as a reminder of the value of this free resource provided by our state.”

DISCUS – which stands for Digital Information for South Carolina USers – provides free access to an electronic library that’s available 24/7.

“My students utilize this resource at home and at school,” said Jackson.

The DISCUS program is considering creating a mascot for the entire K-12 community, so perhaps DISCUS, the Fish will become famous!   Would you like to see DISCUS, The Fish become our mascot?  Tell us what you think.  We welcome your ideas and stories about implementing and using DISCUS at your institution.
